How IP Address Detection Works

Every request your browser makes includes your IP address in the HTTP headers. Our tool reads this directly from the server-side request — so it shows exactly what websites see when you connect to them. We then cross-reference your IP with the ip-api database to enrich it with geolocation, ISP, ASN, and proxy/VPN flags.

What the Fields Mean

ISP

The company that provides your internet connection. This is what the destination server sees as your network provider.

ASN

Autonomous System Number — a unique identifier for a network on the internet. Used for routing and IP ownership lookups.

Organization

The registered owner of the IP block. May differ from ISP for data centers and cloud providers.

Proxy Flag

Set when ip-api identifies your IP as belonging to a known proxy, VPN, or anonymizing service.

Hosting Flag

Set when your IP is registered to a data center or cloud provider (AWS, GCP, Hetzner, etc.) rather than a residential ISP.

Mobile Flag

Set when the IP is assigned by a mobile carrier. Mobile IPs rotate frequently and are hard to block.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a public IP address?
A public IP address is the IP address your ISP assigns to your connection. It's visible to every website you visit and can be used to identify your approximate location, ISP, and network type.
What does "proxy detected" mean?
The ip-api database flags IPs associated with known proxy servers, VPNs, or anonymizing networks. If your IP shows as a proxy, websites may restrict or challenge your access.
What does "hosting" mean?
"Hosting" means the IP is registered to a data center or cloud provider (like AWS, Google Cloud, or DigitalOcean) rather than a residential ISP. These are common for VPNs and bots.
Why does my IP show the wrong location?
IP geolocation is based on registry data and ISP records, not GPS. It's accurate to the country level in ~99% of cases but city-level accuracy varies. Mobile IPs are especially hard to geolocate precisely.
How can I hide my IP address?
Use a proxy or VPN to route your traffic through a different IP address. Residential proxies are the hardest to detect and block, as their IPs come from real ISP-assigned addresses.
